So today I, um, watched Star Trek. Again.

Hey, Campus Events was showing it for two dollars. TWO. That is the same price as a cookie from the organic vending machine. Only twice as much as a bag of chips from the regular vending machine. And about 1/5 of what my dinner from Rubio's cost today.

I almost decided not to go, because, damn, I have so much shit to do. And I promised myself I would decide where to apply to grad school by the end of today -- which is looking unlikely. (I did have a good talk with Dan about grad school and other things today, though.)

But today kind of sucked -- tired the moment I woke up, frustrating practise, scratchy throat (o hai post-nasal drip), angry at work, dozed off in the stacks at work, didn't play well in a coaching -- and I decided that no, I needed to go to this movie. Because I need the future to be bright and shiny and beautiful and full of lens flares and french horn solos.

Seriously, this film has a great score. I hope the horn soloist got paid really well. And I love that they used the original theme for the end credits.

Honestly, Star Trek just gets better and better, possibly because now I've seen about 20 times as much TOS as I had when I first watched it. The only thing I dislike about it is that they have sound in space. Everything else is beautiful. Even Jennifer Morrison is beautiful as Kirk's mom, and I hate Dr. Cameron in House.

Speaking of House, in the first scenes on the bridge of the Enterprise, before Pike goes to the Narada -- the guy at the console behind and to the captain's right, he looks just like Kal Penn (Dr. Kutner, Kumar, and now Assistant Director in the White House Office of Public Liason). Obviously, it's not him, but still. Mostly this is notable because it's also John Cho's (Sulu, Harold, and the Masochist Asphyxiation Guy in that one episode of House (sadly, a pre-Kutner episode, that probably would have been too much for the fanboys)) first appearance. Trivia! Kal Penn went to UCLA :D

And, omg, I just noticed it tonight, but the shipyard in Iowa -- the big half-built ship looming over everythign is the Enterprise!! AAAAH SO MUCH LOVE. AND AND AND when the shuttle leaves the shipyard, the score has a cue from the TV theme. !!!!! AND OMG ZACHARY QUINTO IS A FANTASTIC FACE ACTOR. So much insult in a near-imperceptible narrowing of the eyes! EEEEEEEEEEEE. FASCINATING. And crazy Engineer Olsen wears a RED JUMP SUIT. HAHAHA.

Okay, so some things are a little strange to me. Old Spock seems so human and smiley, it's a little weird comparing it to Nimoy's Spock in TOS, where he's quite possibly even more impassive than Quinto's Spock. Dude, it must be so hard to be Spock, and not be allowed to laugh when hilarious things happen, for Nimoy and Quinto both. It's also weird comparing TOS Romulans, whose design shows strong Roman influences, with Nero and his crew. I mean, they're miners, I guess, so they wouldn't be all centurion-y like the crews TOS's Romulan warbirds? I wish I could remember what the TNG Romulans were like. I'm pretty sure I saw an episode or two with them, but it would have been when I was in middle school and watched TNG every day after cartoons. And then there's Karl Urban, who I will always think of as Lurtz/Éomer (btw it's weird seeing him as not-blonde), and who I never would have thought of casting as Bones -- but I love it anyway, even when his Kiwi accent overpowers the Middle America accent he puts on. But maybe the weirdest thing is Eric Bana as Nero. The only other things I've actually seen him in are Troy and Black Hawk Down (and Finding Nemo but I didn't know that until I looked him up on IMDB just now), admittedly, but it never seems like a role that fits him. I mean, Munich, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Time Traveler's Wife? Then again, he was Bruce Banner in the 2003 Hulk movie. And, omg, how hilarious is it that he played Romulus in a film called Romulus, My Father, and then Nero, a "very troubled Romulan"? Ahaha. Still, it's a far cry from Hoot or Hector. Or at least, it feels that way.

BUT OMG I WANT SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS THAT ARE SPACESHIPS. MOST ADORABLE PROP EVER. I CAN HAS?
