This has been bothering me recently:
Oct. 18th, 2008 10:19 amMaybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm sanctimonious. But I realized a little while ago that while driving, it is very important to me to be able to claim the moral high ground. This includes things like using my turn signals, coming to a complete stop at stop signs, and not making the illegal left turn out of the Ralphs parking lot even though it is the fastest way back to my house. So one of the things that I have been noticing more and more in the past weeks that really annoys me is that people riding bicycles in LA and Long Beach don't follow the rules of the road. Having spent many years riding my bike to and from the park in LB, and having spent my socially formative years on a bicycle in Davis, this offends me.
Dear cyclists: you are in fact operating a vehicle and therefore you do need to stop at stop signs and traffic lights (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP AT THE LIGHTS OR YOU WILL GET RUN OVER). This is not negotiable. It is the law. You really also should not swerve casually across the double yellow into the wrong side of the road, even if you are making a left turn. And, yes, my pet peeve DOES apply to you: SIGNAL YOUR INTENT TO TURN OR CHANGE LANES. I KNOW YOU HAVE HANDS I CAN SEE THEM HOLDING THE HANDLEBARS.
*sigh*
I mean, there's just NEVER an excuse for rudeness. NEVER.
