thoughts (and an unintended rant)

1. penicillin smells terrible i want to retch every time i open the bottle
2. daddy told me i should start taking advil instead of the vicodin because the amounts of painkiller in those mofos is ridiculous and too much is bad for your liver or something? i can't really tell the difference, because a) no fun vicodin-related side-effects for me and b) i can't tell if the hurt is there or if it's not. well i mean the only thing that hurts so far is my jaw, which is dully sore all the time whether or not i'm drugged up.
3. i finished deathly hallows and am at a loss as to what to do with myself. i can't write, i can't draw, i can't practise -- i can colour and i can knit, but i have no desire. also, it made me cry at various intervals, but i was overall satisfied with it. exciting from the get-go, and so intriguing, and taking it (slightly) slower let me follow the tug of memory to look stuff up in hbp, which was awesome when i was right.
4. side note to z-chan, since i just saw your comment to me a few posts pack -- it's not that i dislike the canon Tonks ship. I mean, it's canon, and I've discovered a strange purist tendency in myself over the past several years, so of course i'm not going to ignore it or deny it or anything. it's just that
a) I felt it was extremely poorly handled in HBP, as were all of the romances in that book. They felt forced and unnatural to me when I read it -- pastede, if you will. I re-read it this week, and on this go, the H/G felt more real, felt like it came on more gradually now that I was looking for it, and I'm not going to deny or ignore that, either, even though i like D/G a lot -- I think it's sexier, mostly, with a comforting Shakesperian touch, even if they're all drastically out of character. But I still felt that Tonks's behaviour in the Hospital Wing (as well as Molly's and McG's, all of whom strong female characters that I deeply enjoy and admire, except right then -- honestly, if there was ever a moment that was just NOT THE TIME, that was it), and then at the funeral, was deeply inappropriate and it made me really angry. I also felt that Tonks's character was drastically cheapened by her lovestruck suffering. She was SO COOL in OotP, and I embraced her as a strong, hip, spunky young woman who was self-contained, self-sufficient, who could stay spirited and hopeful even in dark times, and who could satisfy the feminist in me -- but everything I admired about her was destroyed in HBP for the worst reason possible. I like her again, but I still miss the spunky, strong, and unattached Tonks of OotP.
b) canon evidence neither proves nor disproves a prior romantic S/R relationship; it is up to one's own interpretation. I've written stuff both with and without (... or at least, not explicitly with, and not intended to be shippy at first) that relationship, and generally I choose to read the books acknowledging that potential because it makes me happy, and it adds to the character dynamics as I view them. I never expected it to be an interpretation confirmed as canon, because, honestly, it's impractical from a couple standpoints: there's not a relevant way to fit it into the story line (as they're secondary or even tertiary characters and the story is very plot-driven, and it's about good vs. evil, Harry vs. Voldy and not relationships, and honestly i wouldn't have the books any other way), and it would be bad business (it's not really the best subject matter for a children's book especially in this day and age when family-friendly has such a specific and narrow meaning, i'm sure she doesn't want to get into that political and social rat's nest, and it would drive away a large portion of her readers, i'm sure). and, sort of, i never wanted it to be confirmed in canon -- like lots of the canon relationships. it's more fun to play with if there are more possibilities. and fic is just that: playing. imagination, bending the rules of canon, and expressing personal interpretations and opinions are celebrated, and i think that's why i'm so into it, you know?
phew. that seems like it's been stewing for a while? i don't know. also, i think i avoided spoilers? that is, as long as y'all are familiar with HBP, nothing will shock you. um. i should go to bed now, eh?

Date: 2007-07-23 03:21 pm (UTC)Snape has the doe.
I thought this from the very beginning, and knew Snape is helping them.
(To all of the people who haven't read this out there, I am not sure. This is guessing . . . all guessing.)
also, i think it is his doe because the doe is Lilly. Doe.. Stag..... snape loves Lilly.
Anyway. Thank you for witnessing me on this Day, July the 23, 2007.
I promise i will read your rant when I return from vacation.

Date: 2007-07-24 08:05 pm (UTC)Anyway. I have to agree with you, as I found HBP to be really rough around the edges, as if major bits had been left out in her hurry to write the book. There were lots of spots where I felt something had been really missing to lead up to the formations of certain relationships, B/F and R/T being the biggest. And yeah, the scene in the infirmary was really, really weird.
I have to admit that I'd almost lost my interest in the fandom between OotP and HBP, as they both felt "off" somehow, but thankfully DH revived my love for the series. Thankfully the spunky Tonks from OotP returned for this book, and it was interesting to see that my suspicions about Snape were correct.
That, and this whole business made me realize how much I miss geeking with you about HP. Now that there's not going to be anymore books coming out, what're we going to do? ;; 0 ;;

Date: 2007-07-30 01:32 am (UTC)JK has this problem with character development. She sort of changes a character's personality drastically per book instead of making it gradual. Or in Ron and Hermione's case... there is no development at all.
Ha.
Good book, anyway. I must say I called a few shots.
